How to Prevent Stress From Keeping You From Work

There was a reported 145% increase in the amount of stress-related absences in 2019. With such an increase pre-Covid-19, businesses can only imagine the amount of stress their workers feel through the pandemic. Employees across the UK face worries over working from home, losing their jobs, or being put on furlough. And the impact stress can have on the mind and body is huge. Stress can cause us to lose sleep at night, making us tired and irritable during the day. It can also shift our mindset to negative thoughts and feelings, leading to more severe mental health issues like depression and anxiety. If you felt overwhelmed in 2020, you might be wondering how to deal with your stress in 2021. Please keep reading for my top tips and advice on what you can do to manage stress and look to a better and brighter 2021.

Find Peace

‘Find some ‘me time’’ is a phrase you will probably come across a lot when looking for ways to manage stress. And I’m not saying that ‘me time’ isn’t sufficient, but it doesn’t always have to be solitude where your mind can finally rest.Instead, I recommend you find peace. This can be alone, in the bath, reading a book by the fire or even on a walk. But, it could also be making time for a date night or a movie night with the family. Peace will mean different things for different people, but whatever makes you happy and reduces stress is something you should be making time for. Sit down, look at your calendar and make time every week for something you love.

Take Control

Don’t be passive in the face of stress, but rather take control of the situation head-on. This will build your confidence around managing stress as well as help you find solutions. The more stressful situations you face rather than avoid, the more skilled you will be to overcome them mentally and physically. The feeling of loss of control is often one of the reasons people stress, to begin with. Taking the leap to say ‘I’m going to address this’ is the first step in addressing stress. From there, can you move one step at a time to figure out how to solve the problem. You will learn many lessons from each incident you take on and understand how your mind and body best handle these situations.

Avoid Unhealthy Habits

Constant fast food, lack of movement, smoking and drinking can make both your mind and body feel sluggish. This will only increase your stress and worsen your mental health as you find more things to worry about. They may feel like short-term solutions to make you forget your stresses, but they will only provide you with more problems to overcome in the long-run.Instead, eat a balanced diet, get your body moving and get enough rest, so you don’t rely on caffeine as much. This will give your mind and body more energy to take on the day and do what needs to be done to sort through and overcome your stresses.

Seek Outside Support

Sometimes we aren’t strong enough to battle our stresses and mental health alone. This is nothing to be ashamed of, as therapy is finally losing the stigma it often carried in the past few years. Now, people finally see therapy as a useful tool to remove stress and mental health illnesses from our lives.Therapy can help you build the emotional and mental strength you need to take control of situations and stay strong in the face of stress. Therapy will provide you with space to openly and honestly discuss what is on your mind. By creating a relaxed and trusting relationship between therapist and client, in-depth discussions can begin where you learn more about your mind, how it works, and the difference between true thought and manipulations caused by mental health illnesses like stress, anxiety and depression. Please take a look at my website to learn more about the therapy services I can offer you.
