Treatment & Therapy Types for Anxiety Disorders

Many people are finding themselves struggling with anxiety disorders. When untreated, this is a debilitating mental health condition that can manifest in various forms, such as social anxiety, separation anxiety or generalised anxiety.

If you’re struggling with an anxiety disorder, it’s important to know that you’re not alone in your struggle. There is a wide range of treatments available to help you manage and overcome your anxiety.

I will discuss some of the treatments that I offer to those suffering from anxiety disorders so that you can decide which treatment might work best for your situation and help you regain control over your life.

What type of therapy is best for anxiety disorders?

If you or one of your loved ones are currently suffering from an anxiety disorder, please be assured that there are several treatment options available that can help individuals manage and alleviate their symptoms.

I offer EMDR treatment (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), which is an especially effective form of treatment for those whose anxiety may have stemmed from traumatic events.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements (or for online sessions, taps and the butterfly hug method), and focuses on reprocessing and resolving distressing memories associated with trauma. As unresolved trauma can cause anxiety in individuals, this can be an effective way to work through the root cause of issues.

Another effective treatment option for anxiety disorders is personal counselling.  My counselling approach is grounded in the core principles of the Person-Centred Approach, which emphasises acceptance, empathic understanding, and congruence.

This means that I provide a non-judgmental and supportive environment where clients can explore their thoughts and feelings without fear of criticism or rejection.

By fostering a trusting therapeutic relationship, I aim to help individuals gain insight into their anxiety and develop coping strategies to manage their symptoms.

Whilst there are a number of different treatment types available, ultimately the best type of therapy depends on the individual’s specific needs and preferences. If you’re looking to treat your anxiety, I would recommend first consulting with a qualified therapist, such as myself, to have your symptoms assessed. This means that the most appropriate treatment method can then be recommended, and a treatment plan can be put into place.

If you are looking for treatment for anxiety disorders in Warrington or online, I offer both EMDR and personal counselling, tailoring my approach to each client's unique circumstances and providing them with the support they need to overcome their anxiety.

What are some of the treatments for anxiety?

For anxiety disorders, including separation anxiety, social anxiety and generalised anxiety, there are a range of different approaches that can help.

EMDR

Characterised by excessive worry, fear and apprehension, anxiety disorders can have a significant impact on sufferers’ daily lives. However, with treatment such as EMDR, individuals struggling with anxiety can regain control of these feelings.

EMDR has shown promising results for treating anxiety disorders, as it works by addressing the underlying traumatic experiences that contribute to anxiety symptoms. It’s for this reason that those suffering from anxiety rooted in past trauma have found that EMDR has helped them to work through their anxiety and feel calmer.

EMDR treatment works to help individuals reprocess the traumatic memories that are leading to their feelings of anxiety. During EMDR sessions, I guide my clients through bilateral stimulation such as eye movements, taps or the butterfly hug method to activate their brains’ natural healing mechanisms. This then allows the client to process and integrate distressing memories or experiences. By reprocessing these traumatic memories, EMDR helps to reduce the emotional intensity associated with them.

One of the key benefits of opting for EMDR treatment for anxiety is its ability to target the root cause of the anxiety, rather than just managing symptoms. By understanding and reprocessing trauma, individuals can develop new perspectives about their experiences, which can lead to a healthy reduction in anxiety symptoms and an improved quality of life.

Personal Counselling

Another proven form of treatment for anxiety disorders is personal counselling

Throughout my time offering personal counselling, I have found that creating a non-judgmental, accepting environment is key to helping individuals address and understand the worries associated with their anxiety. By providing a safe, understanding space for individuals to discuss their feelings, I encourage them to feel more comfortable exploring the root causes of their anxiety. This approach allows them to gain insight into the underlying issues that contribute to their worries and fears.

My Person-Centred Approach encourages individuals to work through their anxiety, whilst also regaining control of their lives. I opt for this approach as it places individuals at the centre of their therapy journey, allowing them to regain a sense of agency over their anxiety and develop strategies to cope with it effectively.

Empathy and positive regard are also at the core of the Person Centred Approach, as this ensures that individuals feel supported and accepted as they take the steps to combat their anxiety. By creating a non-judgmental environment, I find that my clients are more comfortable expressing their fears and concerns, allowing for a deeper exploration of their anxiety.

What are the treatment plans for anxiety?

Whilst treatment plans will vary based on the individual’s needs, most approaches will first involve speaking with a therapist or healthcare professional in an initial appointment.

It’s for this reason that my treatment plans involve initial assessment sessions - as these allow me to understand your unique situation and work with you to create a plan for therapeutic intervention.

After a plan has been formed, you will then have a series of sessions to help tackle your anxiety, targeting worries and aiming to directly reduce anxiety levels and improve overall well-being.
