How Openness To New Ideas & Experiences Can Benefit You

Openness is one of our five personality traits, along with Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. You will generally enjoy trying new things by displaying a high level of openness. Conversely, people with low openness prefer to avoid trying new things. They can instead become creatures of habit. But that doesn't mean it isn't possible to push boundaries.

How can openness benefit you?

Open-minded people tend to be more intellectually curious, creative and imaginative than others. By seeing the world differently, you will enjoy whatever life throws at you. However, if you are narrow-minded, you will most likely be nervous to try new things and find less enjoyment when experiencing them. Therefore, reach out of your comfort zone and experience life differently. Doing so could have wide-ranging benefits for your present and future life.Firstly, you will be more engaged in the world if you are open-minded. This engagement may include a need for stimulation and fun, and you'll be more willing to take risks to feel this rush of interest and exhilaration. People with low levels of 'Openness to Experience' are likely to have structured routines and will enjoy the familiar. Openness influences new behaviours. For example, you are more likely to want to explore if you are open-minded. But if you are close-minded, this won't appeal to you. However, this could be a positive if you're happy doing what you're doing. It's entirely up to you if you'd like to make changes so that you can experience further afield.

Openness is typically associated with positive characteristics.

Open-minded people often possess specific characteristics such as creativity, intelligence and knowledgeability. You will also give great attention to mental imagery, be interested in new things, and enjoy hearing new ideas from others. In addition, if you are open to new experiences, you will enjoy the thought of abstract concepts and potentially be more open to artistic endeavours. Absorption is another characteristic typically associated with higher levels of 'Openness to Experience'. This concept involves immersing yourself in your imagination or fantasies for creative purposes.

How to improve openness.

Do you want to possess more 'Openness to Experience' traits? Then follow my guidance below on open-mindedness.

Be open to seeing the perspectives of others.

It can be easy to shut down an argument when you do not agree with or believe what the other person is saying. However, it's important to see situations from different perspectives. No two people think the same, so exploring their perspective can open you up to new opinions and even shift the issue in another direction. If you immediately choose not to listen, you will be defeating the object of an open mindset and, therefore, won't improve your 'Openness to Experience'. So instead, start practising 'Openness to Experience' by appreciating new ideas and opinions, even if you agree to disagree.

Be open to hearing the things you need to hear.

Close-minded people often find it difficult to take advice or listen to opinions that do not align with their thoughts and feelings. Whether it's to avoid reality or because there is no shifting your point of view, you will prevent growing or healing from these situations. By taking an open-minded approach and listening to others, you appreciate the minds of others and gain advice that could significantly help you, especially as those who care will only ever have your best interests at heart.

Be open to mistakes and welcome change.

Nobody is perfect; mistakes are a part of life and help us grow, but so is owning up to them and understanding where you went wrong. Change is also natural, something you should welcome for a healthy mindset. The next time you make a mistake, whether big or small, don't shy away and dismiss it entirely. Instead, embrace it, understand it and learn from it. Then, ensure you don't follow the same steps again.

Be open to dialogue and knowledge sharing.

Communication can be a one-way process, while dialogue is a two-way process. Sending and receiving views is more beneficial than doing one or the other. Knowledge sharing is an asset; it can open you up to new possibilities you never thought were imaginable. So share information with others in a dialogue setting to be open to experiences and to learn from each other. People who display 'Openness to Experience' tend to be more intellectually and creatively curious. By opening ourselves up to new and different ideas, we can begin to push our boundaries and open up new potential. As a person-centred counsellor based in Warrington, Cheshire, I have a wealth of experience in helping all my clients find the right solutions for them - whether that involves becoming open or not.
